Education System Public schools Universitat (“University”):

Cantons – provide at least one secondary school and have nine universities

Confederation- run 2 Universities

  • Kindergarten – Not Compulsory, though children aged 4-6 years go for 1-2 years.
  • Volksschule (“elementary school”)- Mandatory for every child. Must attend at least the elementary school, compulsorily at the age of seven up to 15-16 years, run by the cantons. They can go to either public or private schools
  • Apprenticeship & Fachhochschule (FH)- After Elementary School, Child may go to apprenticeship , then , either to Secondary School or Fachhochschule (FH) i.e. (“Technical College”).
  • Gymnasium (“secondary school”) and
  • Universitaten (“universities”). Total eleven universities in Switzerland, nine are run by cantons, and two are run by the confederation.

Universities run by the cantons provide non-technical subjects. Universities run by the confederation provide technical subjects. They are therefore called “Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology”.

To be eligible to attend an university for study of 4.5 years, a student must have finished a Gymnasium and own a graduation diploma.
The education is now broken up into two parts similar to the education in the USA:

  • a bachelor study (three years)
  • a masters study (one and a half or two years))
  • After a successful completion of the masters study, one can start working on a thesis in order to get a doctor title. This takes usually three to four years

Universities in Switzerland follow mostly two intakes: Autumn or Fall Intake, and Spring Intake. The Fall intake is for September to February.

Undergraduate:

  • 65% in XII (Senior Secondary Certificate (10+2)) in best 4 subjects (excluding local languages).
  • Successful completion of IELTS/TOEFL

Postgraduate:

  • A Bachelor Degree with good scores /First-class
  • IELTS / TOEFL
  • 2 – 3 Years Work Experience preferable
To apply at English-taught academic institutions in Switzerland, you'll have to pass one of the following widely accepted English language tests: PTE Academic. IELTS Academic. TOEFL iBT.

• Earn & Learn
• For International students, weekly work hours allowed= 15 with flexible hours at say, for e.g., Geneva, where can work up to 30 hours per week.
• Not advisable to take up extra work due to heavy workload in university.

Stay Back

The duration of the Stay Back in Switzerland will be 6 months after graduation. Work Permit will be valid as long as you are employed with a Swiss Employer. If you want to become a Permanent Resident (PR in Switzerland), you must have lived in Switzerland for 10 Years.
