Education System In France

The French educational system is highly centralized; organized and ramified .It is divided into 3 different stages:

The two different kinds of educational institutes one can choose from are, Universities and Grandes Ecoles (competitive institutes).

In France, School is compulsory up to the age of 16 years.

Primary Education University Colleges Higher Education

Children aged 3 for primary Education for next 3 years in kindergarten.

Two Different Types of Institutions :

  • UNIVERSITIES : From Age 16 onwards. Public Universities teaching entire range of all academic areas covering all the subjects. Also trains students for Research Programs. Larger classes, less support systems, generally lower fees. Approximately 85+ Universities.
  • GRANDE ECOLEs: From Age 16 onwards. Unique French Institutions of Modern era, offering very selective and high standard education in various subjects. Ecoles may be Public or Private. Good Quality education with Small class strengths, better support systems like excellent networks of alumni and international partners. Approximately 300+ Ecoles in France.

Part-time Job Opportunities

During Studies:
• Earn & Learn
• Part Time up to 20 hours a week off campus, maximum of 964 hours per year.
• Mimimum salary fixed by French Govt is  8 – 8.75 gross per hour.
• For International students, weekly work hours allowed= 15 with flexible hours at say, for e.g., Geneva, where can work up to 30 hours per week.
• Not advisable to take up extra work due to heavy workload in university.

After studies:
• After a degree is obtained, student may request a temporary residence permit after expiration of “student” residence permit. The temporary residence permit is valid for six months and is non-renewable.
• With Temporary permit, student can work in any kind of salaried job, up to a limit of 60% of the legally permitted working hours.
• If student signs a study relevant employment contract and whose remuneration is at least one and a half times equal to the SMIC, then, full time work is allowed with a request of change in status as an employee. This request has to be made to the Prfecture administrative offices.
• Student can also be recruited by a company even if he is not an EU national, however, having to change legal status as an employee, through a specific procedure
• The document of employment contract or an employment offer from a French company needs to be presented.

  • Entry Requirements for Masters:
    • MBA: A good bachelor degree, 2 to 3 year work experience, GMAT
    • Master: Good bachelor degree
  • Undergraduate: 10+2
  • Graduate:16 years of education required (10+2+4)
  • Some institutions accept 15 years education into their Bridge /Masters Programs
  • Good & strong academic background
  • Good scores in entrance exams like SAT, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, IELTS etc
  • Strong recommendation letters
  • To the point Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement, essays & resumes

Paid Employment – A student after graduation in France can stay back only when he has paid employment. Students who are already employed usually are eligible to apply for a residence permit. This stands true for both the undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

No, now, French Universities are using English as the language of instruction especially in major study areas like Management, engineering, Political science etc, to enroll more international students.
However, we recommend to learn basics of French for your own benefits.

International Students may work part time if their academic schedules permit. They should be registered at an institution approved by the French social security system. Even first year students are permitted to work part time 20 hrs a week.

 

International students from countries outside the European Union for studying more than 6 months must obtain a long term students visa from the French consulate.
